The Experience

A silent encounter with the most biodiverse ecosystem in the Mexican Caribbean.

The Naturelovers Tour is an environmental interpretation experience designed for true nature lovers. We travel by boat for nearly 40 km through channels surrounded by mangroves, where we turn off the engine to listen to the flapping of the birds’ wings and get a closer look—without disturbing them—at the feeding grounds of the Caribbean pink flamingo.

We visit freshwater springs, wetlands, petenes (small tree-covered islets within the mangrove forest), and the coastal dunes of the Gulf of Mexico. With a little luck, you’ll spot crocodiles—Crocodylus acutus and Crocodylus moreletii— as well as endemic mammals.

"It’s not just a boat ride: it’s reading the mangrove forest as if it were a living book, page by page, bird by bird."

Frequently Asked Questions

What travelers like you ask us

Will I definitely see pink flamingos?
Yes. Ría Lagartos is the only nesting site for the Caribbean pink flamingo in Mexico. There is a year-round resident population (~4,500 birds in January) that grows to ~26,000 during the nesting season between April and August. Our guides know the feeding areas, and we approach quietly, respecting the distance the wildlife dictates.
What should I bring on the day of the tour?
Biodegradable sunscreen, a cap or hat, sunglasses, lightweight clothing in neutral colors (avoid bright reds and whites), a towel, a reusable water bottle, a camera or phone with plenty of storage, and, if you have them, your own binoculars (we can also lend you some). For early morning outings, a light sweatshirt.
Is the tour suitable for children and seniors?
Absolutely. The tour is low-impact: leisurely cruising, comfortable seats, and a sunroof. It’s perfect for families, couples, and groups of any age. For children under 5, please contact us first to confirm the availability of a child’s life jacket.
Do I need to know how to swim?
No. You won’t get off the boat in deep water. Everyone wears a life jacket during the tour, and the boat is covered by passenger insurance. The only optional stops are the Mayan mud bath in shallow water and the Gulf beach—and both are entirely optional.
Can you pick me up at my hotel?
If you’re staying in Río Lagartos, we can bring the boat to your hotel’s dock at no extra cost. If you’re coming from out of town (Mérida, Valladolid, Cancún, Tulum, Holbox), we’ll provide you with the exact meeting point and directions on how to get there.
What happens if itrain or the weather is bad?
If the weather compromises safety or the quality of the sighting, we’ll reschedule at no cost or refund your deposit. The rainy season (Jun–Oct) usually brings short afternoon showers: if it rains, we’ll wait at the pier and then continue. The dry season (Nov–May) has clear skies almost every day.
What is the best time to book?
The sunrise tours (5:00–7:00 a.m.) offer the best birdwatching—they’re most active—and the softest light for photography. The sunset tours (3:30 pm) treat you to a coral-colored sky over the estuary as the flamingos fly back. Both moments are magical, each in its own light.
How do payment and cancellation work?
You reserve the boat with a $500 MXN deposit via MercadoPago. The remaining balance is paid in cash or by bank transfer at the beginning or end of the tour. If you need to cancel more than 24 hours in advance, we will refund or reschedule the deposit at no charge.
